As you may be aware, the recent election has resulted in a Labour Government coming into power.
In its manifesto, Labour said it would introduce new legislation as part of its 'new deal for working people' within its first 100 days in power. The party has promised that this plan to 'make work pay' will “ban exploitative work conditions and give workers more rights.”
We wanted to take this opportunity to outline some of the key changes:
Minimum Wage Increase
One of the significant changes is the planned increase in the minimum wage to a 'genuine living wage'. This will involve changing the remit of the independent Low Pay Commission - which advises the government on the minimum wage - so it accounts for the cost of living for the first time. The party also said it would also remove age bands so that all adults are entitled to the same minimum wage.
For those of you currently earning the minimum wage, you will see an increase in your hourly rate in line with the new government mandate. Which during the election was suggested to be £12 an hour, this change is expected to be implemented over the next few months, and we will provide further details as soon as we receive them.
2. Workplace Rights and Protections
Labour emphasised strengthening workplace rights and protections. This includes:
• Enhanced job security measures, such as day one employment rights.
• Stricter regulations against unfair dismissals.
• Improved provisions for maternity and paternity leave.
• Increased support for mental health in the workplace.
Increased support for the menopause
As soon as this is confirmed we will keep you up to date and hopefully this adds to our supportive work environment for everyone. Your feedback is important to us, and we encourage you to share any thoughts or suggestions on how we can better implement these changes contact us at Employeesupport@glengroupltd.com
